Staff Spotlight - Jeremy Albright, PhD

Jeremy Albright, PhD, is a MISHC Statistician conducting statistical analyses for peer-reviewed research manuscripts that utilize MISHC data. In addition, he provides risk-adjusted estimates of hospital and physician performance and builds machine learning models to predict clinical outcomes. Jeremy served as a contract statistician to MISHC for four years before joining the team full time in November of 2021.

“The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan-sponsored Collaborative Quality Initiatives provide an impressive infrastructure to not only track patient outcomes but also collect an extensive array of data that is leveraged in creative ways to improve patient care across the state,” Jeremy said. “I appreciate the collegial atmosphere among smart, motivated colleagues who are asking interesting questions, and working hard to answer them.”

Before joining MISHC, Jeremy ran his own data science consulting firm, providing patient-centered research to hospitals in several states. He also performed statistical analysis to support FDA submissions of medical devices and modified risk tobacco products.

One of Jeremy’s favorite projects has been working with Dr. Devraj Sukul to look at sources of variation in cardiac rehab utilization among patients undergoing TAVR and seeing how, when patients attend cardiac rehab regularly, outcomes clearly improve.

In the next year, Jeremy is excited to build a dashboard to help track disparities in structural heart outcomes. He will also build software to automate the identification of potential data entry errors.

Jeremy graduated summa cum laude from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 2000, and, during his graduate studies at Indiana University, received several honors, including a Fulbright grant to Spain and a best dissertation award. He has taught statistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels and served as an expert witness on several cases requiring data analysis while providing private consulting to several law firms across the U.S. Jeremy has been a contributing author on a wide range of publications in health care research, epidemiology, psychology, pedagogy, and public policy.

Jeremy enjoys reading books, hiking, traveling, and playing piano in his free time.
